Good morning, my fellow Americans. My name is Amanda Brosgole and I would like to be your next president. As a former mayor of a large city, I know what it is like to be an executive and lead. Also, as a former congresswoman, I know what it is like to compromise and work with politicians from both parties. I believe these qualities are necessary to be an effective president. As your next president, I will bring all Americans together, no matter what party you are from. We may not always agree on all of the issues, but I can promise you that I will always be true to my oath, to the Constitution and to the people.
One of the largest threats to our country today is terrorism. Many Americans, especially those living in larger cities, walk around with the fear of a possible terrorist attack looming in their minds. That is no way to live. As your next president, I will work with all law enforcement agencies to assure that we always share national, international and local intelligence information with each other. We must conduct rigorous background checks of all individuals entering this country, not just people from select countries. But not all terrorism comes from overseas; much of it is home-grown. In the past, people living ordinary lives in America for many years have turned to terror. Just look at the Boston Marathon bombers. Although it is almost impossible to stop every terrorist threat, my administration will continue to work with all police departments across the country to “keep our ear to the ground” and root out terror before it erupts. This is one of my main objectives.
This, of course, leads into our involvement in Afghanistan. Since we began our War on Terror shortly after 9/11, the Taliban in Afghanistan has largely been scattered. We did, however, pay a huge price with the loss of many American lives. Those brave men and women have helped to ensure our safety at home and we are forever grateful. Although most of our troops have left Afghanistan, we still have several thousand troops there advising the Afghan military. Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil. It would be great if we could leave Afghanistan altogether but that would just lead to the Taliban growing in strength and posing another threat to the free world. The US has been there for 17 years and if we keep going the way we have been then it doesn't seem like there is any end in sight. I will work with other world leaders to form a new coalition to combat terrorism, the Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS. This is a world-wide problem, not just a US problem but it seems as if the US military is doing most of the dirty work. As your next president, I will unify our allies together to bring this crisis to an end.
Regarding our young citizens, as your next president I will devote a lot of my resources to improving our system of education. In America, we have the world's brightest minds. These young minds need to be nurtured to realize their true potential. A nation of well-educated and motivated young people will ensure that America will continue to lead the world. Even though the individual states have the right to control their own systems of education, as president I will work with each and every one of the states to come to a common consensus. If we all work together, I know that our students will move this nation forward. I believe that one of the major problems in education today are the leaders, not the teaches or the students. Think about this for a moment. Who is in charge of your local police department? A cop who rose through the ranks. Who leads our military? Generals who also rose through the ranks. Who are our judges? Experienced lawyers who know the law. How about your supermarket manager? Yes, a former stock boy who proved himself and was promoted many times. But who runs most of the largest systems of education in America? Politicians and appointed people who know nothing about education. What kind of sense does this make? These people do not know how children learn, they do not know what teachers need and they do not know how to effectively involve parents and the community. Do you know who should direct our educational policy? Our best teachers, that's who? Take the decision-making powers away from the politicians and give it to the professionals who have devoted their lives to educating our children.
There are so many problems with our system of education today. Our high school graduation rates should be higher, there is an inequality of education depending on the student's financial status and the cost of college is too much for many people to bear. How do we deal with these problems? For starters, we should look at other successful countries for answers. Why do some countries excel in math and the US lags behind? Why is it that many other countries produce bilingual students but the United States can't? Let's appoint our top teachers to leadership positions and send them overseas to discover real solutions. We need to stop coming up with a new curriculum every five years just to toss it out because it did not work. It's not fair to the students who suffered through an experimental curriculum, it's not fair to taxpayers who paid for a failed product and it's not fair to us as a community because we didn't fully develop the minds of the young people. This must change. The answers are out there; other countries are doing it and so should we.
Unfortunately, nothing comes cheap. A revised system of education will cost money and we already have a national debt of $21 trillion. As your president, I will work to lower the national debt. My team of experts and most economists agree that a little national debt is good for the economy but $21 trillion is just too high. I promise to reduce it. Just like your household income, debt occurs when you spend more than you take in. In simple terms, America has to spend less money or take in more money or do both. Unfortunately, we are at the point where I will have to do both. I believe that a small cut to military spending will help to bring the budget to a more manageable level. The United States already spends more on defense than China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, France, England and Japan combined. In addition, it will be necessary to raise taxes slightly. I know that I probably just lost a few votes by saying that but I mentioned at the beginning of my speech that I will always be true to the people. I know that raising taxes is not popular but I would rather be upfront with you now as opposed to surprising you after I am elected. All of the experts agree that a small increase in taxes would greatly reduce the debt. Any other candidate that says otherwise is just lying.
I have outlined my platform for dealing with terrorism, education and the economy. I believe I have a winning formula. In order to ensure that my strategies are successful, as president I will appoint inspectors to check-up on the progress of my programs every six months. If, for any reason, one of these programs is not performing as planned, my administration will make changes to assure that the American people get what they were promised.
Next Election Day, I am asking for your vote for president. A vote for Amanda Brosgole is a vote for your future. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.
